BIOGRAPHY

Even as a child walking in the woods or strolling on a beach,
Karen observed that objects in the environment “spoke to her”. By now
she has an extensive “found object” collection that serves as reference
or inspiration in her artwork.

Whether a figurative piece, a work that refers to nature, or a
totally abstract sculpture, the constant is an interest in organic form.
They describe the vibrancy of growth. She seeks to comment on the
essential human experiences of birth, life and death. Often that means
finding parallels in nature.

Karen strives to depict both the beauty and the rawness of life.
She is drawn to how nature can be both spectacularly beautiful and
horribly disgusting without any regard for either condition. It just is.
Sometimes nature is humorous; sometimes forms seem threatening or
mysterious.

These themes are reflected across various types of her artwork,
including public sculptures, smaller pieces for intimate settings,
drawings, paintings, and even jewelry. Karen frequently creates designs
tailored to specific locations, where the dynamic energy of her organic
forms complements architectural interiors and plazas. This placement
allows viewers to encounter familiar shapes in unexpected contexts,
encouraging them to see the world with a renewed perspective.
Karen received her BFA degree from the University of the Arts in
Philadelphia and her MFA degree from the University of Massachusetts
in Amherst. She currently teaches sculpture, drawing, painting and
watercolor at Gwynedd Mercy College and is also co-curator of Art in
the Storefront in Ambler.
